Iowa City Police have arrested a man they say assaulted and threatened his cousin with a knife after the man accused him of wanting to sleep with his wife.
Officers were called to a domestic disturbance at the California Avenue residence of 20-year-old Joan Mosquera Vega at 2:30 Friday morning. An investigation determined that Mosquera Vega’s cousin, who has lived with him for eight months, had accused him of wanting to sleep with his wife. Mosquera Vega allegedly responded by punching the man in the face. While lying on the ground following the ensuing fight, Mosquera Vega’s cousin reportedly said he was done fighting. Police say Mosquera Vega kicked his prone cousin two more times before grabbing a kitchen knife. A witness was able to disarm Mosquera Vega and call 9-1-1.
The cousin reportedly suffered a swollen eye, a swollen lip and a cut on his elbow. Mosquera Vega was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 4:00 Friday morning and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury and Domestic Abuse Assault Using a Weapon. If convicted on both charges, Mosquera Vega faces a maximum of three years in jail.
