An Iowa City man who tried to purchase a weapon at an Iowa City gun store while smelling of marijuana last year has been arrested.

According to the police report, Andre Smith of Dodge Street was 21 on April 22nd 2022, when he went into Fin and Feather on Highway 1 West at around 3pm. He reportedly filled out a firearm transaction form to acquire a Glock pistol from the establishment.

Witnesses reported that Smith smelled of marijuana while filling out the form. Police say he has been arrested twice for marijuana possession after filling out the form.

Smith was interviewed and allegedly told authorities that he has always been a pot user and didn’t fully read the firearm transaction form.  It was learned that Smith also reportedly provided a false address when filling out the form.

A Warrant was requested on May 31st of that year; Smith was formally charged Friday afternoon with Using False Information to Acquire a Weapon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.

Smith was also wanted for not appearing at a Case Management conference earlier this month on Driving while Barred as a Habitual Offender and Marijuana possession charges from May 2022.
