Iowa City man charged with Arson after throwing lit book at Sheriffs Office

An Iowa City man was charged with Arson after an incident at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office earlier this month.

According to the arrest report, 65-year-old Mark Miller of 9th Street entered the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office just after 2am on September 14th.  Once inside, he reportedly lit a small book on fire with a lighter.

Once the book began burning, Miller allegedly threw it against the front desk glass window and exited the building.

Miller was arrested and originally charged with with 3rd degree Arson, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted. Court records show the charges have been downgraded to Reckless Use of Fire, a serious misdemeanor. Miller was treated at the VA Hospital and on Friday, his arraignment was scheduled for October 16th.
