The Muscatine Police Department evacuated and blocked off the riverfront earlier this week after a hand grenade was discovered.

The Muscatine Journal reports resident Leanna Wagner got a surprise Tuesday evening  when she picked up a Crown Royal bag from the water and turned it over, only to have a pineapple hand grenade fall out.

She described it as old, wrapped in white tape, and having military numbering. She believes the bag had been in the water for a long time.

A press release from the City of Muscatine said the upriver end of Riverside Park was evacuated and blocked off at the Cedar Street entrance. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office was notified and they removed the device. A follow-up investigation is being conducted.
