The University of Iowa is asking the state Board of Regents for permission to update the 50-year-old Cambus Maintenance Facility and modernize its fleet with electric vehicles.

The Daily Iowan reports funding for the $17 to $18 million project would come from federal grants and parking and transportation auxiliary reserves.

The current Cambus facility on South Madison Street houses all 35 buses and fleet vehicles.  The maintenance facility is north of Kinnick Stadium, and the distance between the Transportation Center and the Maintenance Facility has created service delays. The project would create dedicated vehicle maintenance spaces and add a dozen electric vehicles, putting fleet services, drivers and maintenance staff all in one place.
