An Iowa County man who Iowa City Police say was arrested after he recorded himself drinking from a bottle of bourbon in front of a medical emergency now faces a felony charge after allegedly vandalizing a squad car.
First responders were called to the 200 block of Iowa Avenue just after 1:30 Sunday morning for a subject who friends believed had been drugged. Police say while the person was getting medical attention, 36-year-old Nelson Williams of Williamsburg began using his cellphone to record himself drinking from a bottle of Maker’s Mark. An officer demanded he hand the bottle over, which Williams reluctantly did. The officer then poured out the bourbon and told Williams to go home.
Police say Williams instead began following the officer around and asking, “Really?” He also allegedly continued to interject himself into the medical call despite being told to leave by police, paramedics and firefighters. Williams was eventually placed under arrest. Police say he resisted arrest and threatened to urinate in the back seat of the squad car. Once inside the vehicle, Williams reportedly kicked the rear passenger side door, causing an estimated $1,500 in damage.
Williams is charged with 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief, Public Intoxication and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over five years in prison.
