Iowa City man reportedly found with meth and marijuana when picked up on parole violation

An Iowa City man on probation for theft and assault charges was picked up for reported violations.

41-year-old Stephen Carter was given suspended sentences on 2nd degree Theft and Assault with Bodily Injury charges in October of last year.  Since that time, authorities state that Carter has violated terms of that probation by being charged with Public Intoxication and simple assault, admitting to using Marijuana, and failing to keep regular appointments for his monitoring program. As of last week, his whereabouts were unknown.

Police located Carter Monday afternoon near the intersection of Boyrum Street and Southgate Avenue.  Upon search incident to his arrest, Carter allegedly had a bag of suspected marijuana in his bag that he admitted was his.

He was taken to the Johnson County Jail, where a full strip search reportedly located three Ecstasy pills which field tested positive for meth.

Carter was charged with marijuana possession and possession of contraband in a correctional institution. If convicted on the new charges, he could be sentenced to a maximum of six years in prison.
