The father of a former University of Iowa student who was supposed to stand trial on robbery, theft and attempted murder charges pleaded guilty in court Monday to aiding and abetting his son’s escape to Jordan.

The Daily Iowan reports Alfred Younes was arrested on May 9 in Omaha, Nebraska, while attempting to board a flight to Amman, Jordan. Ali Younes’ mother, Lima, was found guilty in early August of aiding and abetting in the escape. She is due to be sentenced September 21st and could get up to five years in prison.

Alfred Younes requested a deferred judgement. A sentencing hearing will be set at a later date.

Ali Younes reportedly strangled a woman to unconsciousness outside Art Building West on the University of Iowa campus in April 2022 and stole jewelry from her valued at $20,000. He was arrested at his girlfriend’s house and allegedly had the stolen jewelry with him.

Younes was on house arrest living with his parents when he left the country on May 6th, 10 days before he was set to go to trial.
