A suspect whose gun was allegedly used in a fatal Iowa City shooting will be back in court Monday.

The shooting took place outside the former H Bar on South Van Buren Street on October 23rd of last year. Iowa City Police say several physical fights broke out just before 2am, one of which involved 24-year-old Tramon Robinson of Coralville. During the scuffle, a firearm in Robinson’s possession fell to the ground. 20-year-old Antonio Scotton of Cedar Rapids reportedly picked up the handgun and fired several rounds. 36-year-old Waymond Thomas, who was struck by the gunfire, died from his injuries.

Robinson has two felony convictions, and as such was ineligible to possess a handgun. He’s charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.

Monday morning’s case management conference is set for 9:00 at the Johnson County courthouse.

Scotton is charged with Voluntary Manslaughter and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted on both charges, he could be sentenced to up to twenty years in prison. Scotton’s trial is set to begin on December 12th.
