An Iowa City man faces charges that he stole items from the Johnson County Poor Farm.

55-year-old Kurt Brookhart is accused of taking multiple items from the property over the summer. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says they were tipped off when they noticed Brookhart had put some of the items up for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

Video from a nearby trail camera reportedly shows a subject matching Brookhart’s description trespassing on the Poor Farm property around 1am on July 15th. A search warrant executed at Brookhart’s Slowthower Road residence allegedly turned up a battery the alleged victim uses to power an electric fence, as well as a stolen garden cart. Both stolen items had the alleged victim’s name written on them in permanent marker.

Brookhart is charged with 4th Degree Theft and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.

Brookhart is currently facing a November 14th trial on a 1st Degree Burglary charge after he allegedly forced his way into an Iowa City residence and attacked the occupant with a metal stick and poured gasoline on him.
