North First Avenue Improvement Project in Iowa City to begin in mid-September

Weather permitting, the North First Avenue Improvements Project is scheduled to begin in mid-September.

The project includes a complete reconstruction of First Avenue between Stuart Court and Hickory Trail, minor storm sewer improvements, and sidewalk curb ramp updates at the First Avenue and Stuart Court intersection. It is anticipated the project will be complete in mid-November.

Detour

A detour route of Rochester Avenue (east of First Avenue) and Scott Boulevard will be used for the duration of the project. Commuters should note that Rochester Avenue will remain closed west of First Avenue to Rita Lyn Court due to the Rochester Avenue Reconstruction Project.

Project Phasing

The Stuart Court intersection will be constructed in halves to maintain access to residents. For the majority of the project, residents traveling to Stuart Court should access First Avenue from Rochester Avenue. While the south half of the intersection is being constructed, residents traveling to Stuart Court should access First Avenue from Scott Boulevard. It is anticipated that work on the south half of the intersection will begin in late October.

Access to Regina Schools

Temporary modifications will be made to Regina’s western exit off of Rochester so that it may be used as a parking lot entrance as well. Temporary modifications will also be made to Regina’s entrance off of First Avenue to allow easier parking lot access to northbound traffic.
