Iowa City will require an October 10, 2023 City Primary.

According to a release from the Johnson County Auditor’s office, only District A qualifies for the primary, as three candidates filed for a seat on the City Council.  They are current Council members Laura Bergus and Pauline Taylor, and former Iowa congressional candidate Tim Borchardt.

District A includes city precincts 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12,13, 26 and 27.

All voters in District A will be able to participate regardless of party affiliation. The top two District A candidates will advance to the November 7 election.

This will be city’s first district—only primary since 1985.  The last city-wide primary election was in 2011.
University Heights has never required a primary.
