Iowa City firefighters responded to an apartment fire early Labor Day morning.

According to a news release from the ICFD, units were dispatched to 1229 Shannon Drive at 4:14 Monday morning to investigate a fire alarm. While enroute, a medical emergency alarm for the same address was also received.

Crews arrived on-scene seven minutes after the initial call and encountered smoke on the third floor of the structure. Firefighters entered one apartment unit and found an occupant inside. The occupant was treated at the scene by the Johnson County Ambulance Service and taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Firefighters determined the fire had been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system, and other occupants of the building were notified by smoke detectors. Crews remained on the scene to remove smoke and water from the building. No further injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

Damages from the fire are estimated at $80,000 and the cause remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office. The American Red Cross is assisting two occupants of an additional apartment displaced by the fire.
