Iowa City woman charged with moped thefts

An Iowa City woman was arrested last week after an alleged string of moped thefts.

37-year-old Tiara Roberts was allegedly was observed the evening of August 13th on a stolen moped. Police caught up with her the next day at the Burger King on Boyrum Street and allegedly found that the moped she was on that afternoon was also reported as stolen. During the course of arrest, Roberts was reportedly found with marijuana and a glass pipe for smoking the substance.

On the evening of August 24th, Roberts was reportedly seen on video entering an unoccupied garage and stealing a moped.  Traffic cameras also captured Roberts riding around the area for several days.  An officer subsequently located the stolen moped at the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street the evening of the 27th and surveillance video from the scene allegedly shows Roberts getting off the vehicle with another person. Residents of the complex and officers who had previous contact with her provided positive identification.

Over the past month, Roberts has been charged with three counts of 2nd degree Theft, one count of 3rd degree Burglary, one count of 3rd degree Theft, Marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Court records indicate she was also charged on August 31st with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance.

If convicted on all the charges against her, Roberts could be sentenced to up to over 27 years in prison.
