Iowa City woman accused of stealing hundreds of dollars in groceries

An Iowa City woman allegedly caught trying to steal groceries at the Waterfront HyVee earlier this month now faces of charges of bilking the store out of hundreds of dollars over the past three-plus months.

36-year-old Barbara Perez-Cardona was at the store the afternoon of August 2nd and allegedly pretended to scan nearly $230 worth of merchandise, and tried to leave without paying for the items when she was stopped by security.

The incident triggered an investigation, where transaction information and surveillance video was reportedly discovered showing Perez-Cardona using self-checkout stations 34 times and intentionally failing to scan multiple items.

Between April 28th and August 2nd, Perez-Cardona is accused of stealing over $1630 in groceries and merchandise.

She faces a charge of 2nd degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
