An Iowa City man is accused of shooting up an occupied residence, a garage, and a vehicle in Lone Tree.
Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of Linn and Seibert Streets just after 12:30 Tuesday morning for a report of shots fired. Arriving officers say they heard a man calling for help from inside one of the nearby residences. An investigation found multiple bullet holes in a closed garage door, with the shots appearing to have been discharged from inside.
The house was cleared, and 33-year-old Jonathan Dargitz of Cross Park Avenue was reportedly found lying on the floor of the garage. Numerous empty 9mm shell casings and an empty 33 count magazine were located under Dargitz, and a Glock handgun was found under a vehicle next to him.
An investigation determined that Dargitz had brought the gun to the location. He allegedly began shooting through the closed garage door because he believed people outside were, in the words of deputies, “trying to get him”.
Multiple neighboring properties…including an occupied residence, a garage and a vehicle…were damaged. Total damages are estimated at over $10,000. A check of the gun’s serial number showed it was reported stolen from Coralville on April 16th.
Dargitz is charged with Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage, Trafficking in Stolen Weapons, and 1st Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 17 years in prison.
