A longtime Johnson County activist has died.
87-year-old Caroline Dieterle died at her Lone Tree home on August 10th from what her family describes as a “cardiac event”. According to her obituary, Dieterle had just returned from visiting her children and grandchildren along the shores of the Great Lakes.
Dieterle was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She moved to Iowa City in 1967, where she spent the rest of her life fighting for progressive causes. She began working at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1974 before taking a position in the Johnson County Auditor’s Office in 1975. Dieterle began working as an archivist for the Daily Iowan in 1977…a job she kept until the position became obsolete in 2013.
In 1980, Dieterle began working a second job as an academic advisor at the University of Iowa.
Dieterle played an active role in multiple local progressive organizations, including the Johnson County Democrats, the Emma Goldman Clinic, the Crisis Center Food Bank, and others. She was also active in several progressive causes, writing numerous opinion pieces for local newspapers.
