An Iowa City transient faces charges that he assaulted another man and threatened multiple bystanders with a meat cleaver.

Iowa City Police were called to a fight at the Salvation Army on Gilbert Court just before 1:30 Monday afternoon. Witnesses say 33-year-old Sean Christopher was assaulting another subject when others tried to calm him down. That’s when Christopher reportedly produced a meat cleaver and made several slashing and chopping motions toward the bystanders.

An investigation determined the fracas started when Christopher became involved in an argument between two other men. He allegedly struck one of the men in the arm with a bar, then shoved him down into a pile of property, causing abrasions.

Christopher is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury and Disorderly Conduct. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
