A Cedar Rapids woman faces charges that she assaulted an Iowa City Police officer while he was trying to conduct a separate arrest.

Investigators say the officer was trying to make an arrest on the 100 block of East Washington Street just after 1:45 Sunday morning when 18-year-old Demetria Brownridge of 9th Avenue SW began interfering. When an officer attempted to push Brownridge away, she allegedly hit the officer’s hand.

Brownridge was placed under arrest and reportedly resisted handcuffing. She’s charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, she faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
