An Iowa City man was arrested after allegedly stealing an acquaintance’s dog.

The incident reportedly occurred on the 1500 block of Rochester Avenue at approximately 10pm on August 1st.  According to police, 52-year-old Justin Meade of East Washington Street stopped by to speak with the victim, who went inside for the night after a brief conversation.  Meade allegedly took the dog without the owner’s permission.

The next morning the victim woke up and realized his dog was missing. Meade allegedly told the man’s roommate that he had taken the dog and it was at his residence.  The dog was then recovered at Meade’s apartment.

Meade allegedly admitted to taking the dog, valued at $600.

A warrant was issued on Wednesday; Meade was already in the Johnson County Jail on an unrelated charge. He faces up to a year in jail if convicted on a 4th degree Theft charge.
