Longtime Iowa City City Manager Stephen Atkins has died.
That’s according to an obituary published on the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service website. Atkins died Tuesday at age 78 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
The Dayton, Ohio native served as Iowa City City Manager for an unprecedented 21 years starting in 1986. During his tenure, Atkins helped the city recover from the floods of 1993 and the 2006 tornado. New sewer and water plants were built under Atkins’ watch, including the water plant off North Dubuque Street on what is now known as Stephen Atkins Drive.
Former Iowa City mayor Matt Hayek described Atkins as a “mentor” and a “good man”.
Visitation will be from 3 PM to 6 PM, Wednesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City, with remarks at 5:30 PM.
