The City of Iowa City is considering charging a fee in its parking ramps for electric vehicle charging stations.

According to the Gazette, the City Council unanimously approved first consideration of an ordinance adding the fee that would apply to charging in the city’s six downtown parking ramps at their Tuesday meeting. The ordinance needs to be approved two more time before going into effect.

The proposed fee of 16 cents per kilowatt-hour breaks down to roughly $4 for a typical four-hour charging session.

The fee would allow the city to break even on operations of the charging stations; otherwise, the city would eat the approximately $10,500 cost to operate the stations.

The US Department of Energy says the state of Iowa currently has 320 public charging locations with 698 charging ports, an increase of over 40 from this time last year.
