Iowa City Police have arrested a man they say used a stolen credit card to purchase alcohol and cigarettes.

40-year-old Kevin Burns of East Market Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 2:15 Sunday morning. According to arrest records, at approximately 11am on June 27th, Burns stole the alleged victim’s bag from an outdoor seating area near the intersection of Market and Linn Streets. He then reportedly used a credit card found inside the bag to make a purchase of $2.05 at the Casey’s on North Dubuque Street. Burns then reportedly went to John’s Grocery on East Market Street and used the card to purchase alcohol and a carton of cigarettes, with a total purchase price of approximately $120.

Surveillance video from both locations allegedly shows Burns making the purchases. Police say the Casey’s video also shows him carrying the stolen bag.

Burns is charged with Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
