Alleged shooter identified, charged in July 4th shooting on Iowa City’s west side

Over the last week Iowa City Police have been rounding up suspects in a riot surrounding an Independence Day shooting on Iowa City’s west side. Now, the alleged shooter has been identified and charged.

37-year-old Devwon Bledsoe of Holiday Road in Coralville faces charges of Attempted Murder, Going Armed With Intent and Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury. Officers were called to the 2600 block of Westwinds Drive just after 1am on July 4th for a man who had suffered two gunshot wounds. Four .45 caliber casings were found near the victim. Video evidence and witness statements indicated Bledsoe was the shooter.

Multiple surveillance videos taken from the scene also reportedly show a group of 10-15 people who assembled to use unlawful force against another person. Ten people have been charged with felony rioting so far. Bledsoe was also reportedly a part of the rioting, and faces additional charges.

If convicted on the charges relating to the shooting, Bledsoe faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.
