An Iowa City transient was arrested after allegedly threatening a downtown tavern employee and getting into an altercation with police at Mercy Hospital.
Just before 3:30pm Saturday, 39-year-old Levi Angel entered DC’s Sports Bar on South Dubuque Street despite being told by staff he was not allowed inside. When a staff member pointed at the door and told Angel he couldn’t be in there, he allegedly raised a pen above his head and used an expletive while threatening to kill the employee. He then reportedly told the man that security cameras would not save his life.
Police located Angel near the business, and he allegedly admitted going in the bar but denied threatening anyone. He was placed under arrest and was taken to Mercy Hospital for evaluation at his request.
Angel was discharged at 5:50 pm and officers then commanded him to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed and taken to jail. Angel reportedly refused and attempted to hold his hands together when officers attempted to place his hands behind his back. While being taken to the ground, Angel allegedly wrapped his legs around an officer’s holstered gun and refused to let go. During the altercation, the gun turned and was digging into the officer’s thigh, causing pain. Force had to be applied to get Angel to release his grip and complete the handcuffing process. He refused to walk out of the hospital on his own, and was escorted by officers.
Angel faces multiple charges; they include Trespass, 1st degree Harassment, Assault with the Use or Display of a Weapon, Interference with Official Acts causing Bodily Injury, and Disarming a Peace Officer. If convicted on all charges, Angel faces a prison term of up to over ten years.
