A Coralville man is in custody after a traffic stop search reportedly yielded cocaine and amphetamines.

23-year-old Tyler Palmer of Boston Way was stopped in the 2 am hour Saturday for a traffic offense near the intersection of Highway 6 and Rocky Shore Drive.  Upon contact, he allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, unsteady balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. Palmer reportedly admitted to drinking and showed measurable impairment on field tests.  A Datamaster test showed his blood-alcohol level at .042 percent, inconsistent with his behavior.  A DRE was conducted and it was determined Palmer was under the influence of alcohol and a CNS stimulant.

A post-arrest search of his person allegedly turned up a baggie of cocaine; a subsequent probable cause search of Palmer’s vehicle reportedly found over three dozen pills of amphetamine in various doses and containers.

Palmer was charged with OWI first offense, Driving while Suspended, Keeping Vehicle for Controlled Substances, a Class B and Class C Controlled Substance Violation, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and two Tax Stamp violations.  If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to 49 years in prison.
