Two individuals have been charged for their alleged participation in a riot that led to a shooting.
Police say the incident occurred early on July 4th on the 2600 block of Westwinds Drive. At approximately 1am, about 10-15 individuals were assembled and reportedly used unlawful force on another person. A person was shot during this incident.
Investigators were able to obtain surveillance video from multiple sources, and have identified 20-year-old Emma Backen of Tama Iowa and 21-year-old Eric Fredieu of Iowa City as being part of the crowd. Both individuals were allegedly present during the duration of the incident.
Fredieu was taken into custody early Friday and charged with Participation in a Riot, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was also wanted on a warrant after surveillance video showed him at the Hawkeye WMA firearms range shooting an AR-15 style rife, in violation of his conviction on a felony from November last year. He faces an additional charge of Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, a Class D felony. If convicted on the charges, Fredieu could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
Court records do not show Backen has been apprehended as of Friday morning. She faces up to two years in jail if convicted on Participating in a Riot charges.
Five others people were chazgred in the case earlier this week. They inlcude 20-year-old Spirit Nigeria Hall-Carpenter of Shady Glen Court, 20-year-old Cam’ron Wortham of the Pheasant Ridge Apartments, 19-year-old Cora Reed of Atalissa, 20-year-old Delaney Gingerich of The Quarters Apartments on Highway 6 East, and 19-year-old Basel Elhindi of Walden Road.
