An Iowa City transient was arrested twice Sunday night after allegedly stealing from a downtown store and threatening a man while reportedly taking his cellphone.

The first incident occurred at the Bread Garden just after 6, where 39-year-old Levi Angel was accused of taking over $46 worth of merchandise without paying. Officers located him a couple blocks away with the stolen items.  A short time later, he was located in the Ped Mall, and refused to listen to officer commands to show his hands.  Police say they had to take Angel into custody by force.

Then around 10:30pm, Angel approached a man on the 100 block of East College Street in a threatening manner.  The man told him he was going to call 911, so Angel reportedly grabbed the man’s phone and walked away with it. He then allegedly threw the phone on the ground, destroying it.

Angel grabbed the pieces of the phone and fled the area. Officers found parts of the phone in a trash can near Angel, and admitted he had possession of the phone parts.

He was charged with 1st degree Theft, 5th degree Criminal Mischief, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. He also was charged with Interference with Official Acts for the incident earlier in the evening. If convicted on all counts, Angel could be sentenced to over 12 years in prison.
