An Iowa City man who was on probation on a 3rd degree Theft charge has been taken into custody nearly a year after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

In April 2022, 22-year-old Robert Walker was given a 90-day suspended sentence and two years probation for the July 2021 incident.  A subsequent required drug test administered on July 22nd showed Walker testing positive for opiates and THC.  He allegedly missed appointments and drug testing on August 1 and August 4.

According to the probation violation report, Walker had verbalized on more than one occasion that he would rather serve his jail sentence than comply with the terms of his probation.  After missing the August 4th appointment, it was recommended that Walker be arrested and the 90-day sentenced be imposed.

The warrant was issued on August 5th; Walker was finally picked up Friday and faces the original sentence of 90 days.  He remains in the Johnson County Jail awaiting further court proceedings.

Walker was charged with two counts of 1st Degree Robbery and one count of Carrying Weapons in 2018 after University of Iowa Police say he and a juvenile robbed two people at gunpoint outside Rienow Hall. The charges were dropped in a plea deal with prosecutors, and Walker was given a five-year prison sentence on an Extortion charge.

Walker and a group of other men were accused of assaulting two individuals at the Capitol Street parking ramp in June 2021. The two were reportedly assaulted by five or six individuals, with Walker being among them.  He also faced theft charges after he allegedly accessed stolen credit card information and ran up over $3,000 in bills from CHOMP that year. Police say Walker used fake email and names to make CHOMP accounts, but the accounts came back to his real address and phone number. CHOMP representatives told investigators they recognized Walker from deliveries.
