Air quality advisories are in effect for Eastern Iowa as smoke and haze from Canadian Wildfires waft into the Midwest.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for portions of central and eastern Iowa, including Johnson and Linn counties. Fine particulate levels near or above EPA health standards are expected to persist through this evening. The advisory is in effect until 10pm.
The DNR says that elevated levels of fine particulates may be a cause of concern over the next several days as the smoke moves through the state.
It’s recommended that people reduce long or strenuous activities and take more breaks during outdoor activities until the air quality improves.
The low air quality especially effects those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, and outdoor workers.
The air quality advisory continues as the state is suffering drought conditions that the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities says will continue to intensify and may persist into September.
Their forecast for Sunday calls for a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with the possibility of a tenth to a quarter-inch of rainfall.
