An Iowa City man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after an argument with his girlfriend escalated to a physical assault.
Police say 55-year-old Ray Palmer and his girlfriend of eight years have been staying at each other’s places during their relationship. During an argument at the woman’s residence, Palmer allegedly lit some fake flowers on fire and threw them at her, causing minor burns to her finger and hair.
The lit flowers landed on the bed, which caused a fire that was quickly put out.
Palmer left the scene before police arrived. He was eventually located and placed under arrest. Palmer has been charged with 1st degree Arson and 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault, and could be sentenced to up to 27 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
