An Iowa City woman reportedly had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times over the legal limit to drive when she was issued an OWI Sunday night.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Sycamore Street and Burns Avenue just before 8 o’clock, when an officer responded to a reported hit-and-run. Upon arrival, she came upon a 2012 Ford Focus owned by 51-year-old Wendy Robles missing a tire. Robles reportedly arrived back on the scene in a white pickup truck where she was a passenger. She was crying and allegedly stumbled out of the truck.
Robles told the officer that she was driving back after taking her niece home when she took the turn too wide and hit the car parked at the corner. She reportedly admitted to having been drinking, and was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, unsteady balance, and the odor of ingested alcohol.
Robles was reportedly unable to complete field sobriety testing. She provided a PBT showing a blood-alcohol level of .249 percent, and a subsequent Datamaster test showed it at .226 percent.
Robles was charged with her first OWI, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to one year if convicted.
Robles contacted KCJJ Tuesday about this story and did not deny the charge. She did, however, deny allegations of being unsteady on her feet and being unable to complete field testing. She admitted to having bloodshot eyes, but blamed it on her crying.
