A Coralville man was taken into custody over the weekend after an earlier attempt to purchase a firearm using false statements.

Police reports say 21-year-old Davryn Stewart of 4th Avenue was seen on surveillance video inside of Scheels in the firearms section the afternoon of May 1st.  Stewart filled out and submitted a firearms transaction form in the hopes of purchasing a handgun.  Court records show that Stewart was issued a notice of firearm prohibition for being an unlawful drug user and addict in July 2021, stemming from an arrest in Linn County.

Stewart reportedly gave false information on the firearms form by providing an address where he no longer lives and stating he was not a drug user.  In a later interview, Stewart admitted the address was not his current residence, and that he was still using drugs. He allegedly admitted to using marijuana before and after attempting to purchase the firearm.

An arrest warrant was issued, and Stewart was taken into custody early Saturday morning. He’s been charged with providing False Information to Acquire a Weapon, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
