A Belle Plaine man has been taken into custody after it was allegedly determined he was drunk when he crashed his pickup into a brick City of Tiffin welcome wall.
The incident happened around 3:15 am on November 6th. 28-year-old Brent Stull reportedly hit the brick wall head on after driving through a roundabout on South Park Road. He was allegedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes and smelled strongly of ingested alcohol. Stull reportedly had several bar wristbands from Iowa City bars on his arm, and admitted to consuming alcohol earlier in the evening.
Stull then reportedly stated that he was on his way home to Belle Plaine when he fell asleep while driving, causing the accident. Because he sustained minor injuries in the crash, Stull was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He consented to a blood draw, which the DCI lab showed his blood-alcohol level at the time of the accident was .125 percent.
The city of Tiffin estimated it would cost about $20,000 to repair the brick wall and the sign attached.
A warrant was issued for Stull’s arrest, and he was booked at the Johnson County Jail Monday night. He’s been charged with OWI first offense and Failure to Maintain Control. He could be sentenced to up to a year in jail if convicted.
