An Illinois man arrested over the weekend in Iowa City on an OWI charge added to his troubles when he allegedly brought ecstasy into the Johnson County Jail with him.

The incident started around 9:20 pm Friday on Highway 218 South. 42-year-old Aaron Agnew of Quincy Illinois was reportedly stopped on the side of the road to relieve himself when a Johnson County deputy made contact with him. Agnew admitted he had been driving, and was allegedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes and unsteady balance. When asked if he had been drinking, he reportedly admitted to having two beers before driving and to having a beer in the vehicle. Field testing showed measurable impairment, and a PBT showed his blood-alcohol level over the legal limit.

A check of Agnew’s driving record showed his status as revoked.

He was taken to the Johnson County Jail for processing. While being searched, Agnew denied having any illegal or unauthorized substances on his person. Deputies did a strip search of Agnew due to his behavior and the fact that a one-hitter had been found in his possession, and found a bag of colored pills stashed in his underwear.  Agnew then allegedly admitted the pills were ecstasy.

He was charged with the OWI, driving while revoked, a Controlled Substance violation, and Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Institution. If convicted on all counts, Agnew could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
