The appearance of conservative commentator Matt Walsh drew hundreds to his lecture at the Iowa Memorial Union Wednesday night, along with about 200 people protesting his appearance.

The Daily Iowan reports that although the lecture started at 7pm, police stopped letting people into the IMU about ten minutes prior because the room was full.

Protesters marched from Hubbard Park to the entrance of the IMU lounge, shouting at attendees as they waited in line to enter the building.

The DI reports that Walsh spoke about “gender ideologues,” how biological sex defines men and women, and his belief that gender identity is instead a difference in personality, not gender.

A video on Twitter shows that someone poured thousands of marbles at the IMU, forcing the attendees to go through the exit with protestors and to walk extremely slowly.

A statement released Wednesday by UI Undergraduate Student Government said they would work to address an increase of transphobia and queerphobia on campus.
