The Coralville City Council has tabled plans to begin its Fifth Street reconstruction project this month after all bids came in over budget.
The Gazette reports the city projected the project would cost $5.2 million, but bids submitted to the state Department of Transportation were significantly higher. The lowest bid was about a third over the budgeted cost.
City Engineer Scott Larson said his department is looking to simplify construction and possibly rebid the project through the Department of Transportation as early as this September.
The original project would have closed 5th Street between 12th Avenue and the 20th Avenue intersection as crews replaced sidewalks, street pavement, water main and storm sewer lines. New trees, lighting and landscaping were planned as part of the project.
