An Iowa City man wanted on a warrant for allegedly violating a no-contact order after being released from custody was arrested Sunday at a Coralville hotel with the protected party.
29-year-old Demontre Briggs of Muscatine Avenue was called in by residents the afternoon of March 26th when he was reportedly wandering the area of Scott Boulevard and East Court Street wearing a bath robe. Officers who found Briggs to check on his welfare were informed that he was recently released from jail for public intoxication and was lost. He requested a ride to Muscatine Avenue, reportedly saying that he had a friend who lived there, but didn’t know the friend’s name.
Police gave him a ride to Muscatine Avenue and he asked to be dropped off in front of a residence that he claimed was his friend’s house but was actually his. After going inside, the officers learned that Briggs was actually arrested for domestic abuse assault and a no-contact order was issued that prevented him from being at his residence. Briggs reportedly refused to open the door or have contact with the officers.
Briggs remained at large on an arrest warrant until Sunday morning, when staff at the Super 7 Motel on 1st Avenue in Coralville called police about a couple who refused to leave at check-out. Briggs was located along with the protected party, who told officers that she believed the protection order had been terminated.
Briggs was taken into custody and charged with contempt for violating the no-contact orders.
