A weekend kitchen fire at an Iowa City home has caused thousands in damage.

In a release from the city, firefighters were called to the home on the 200 block of Lexington Avenue just before 5pm Sunday after a passerby reported the smell of smoke and hearing smoke detectors.

Arriving crews saw smoke coming from the roof. The fire was found in the kitchen and extinguished within five minutes.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but fire and smoke damage to the home is estimated at $15,000.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
