State Senate Republicans are advancing a bill that would require any vote cast by a person who registers on Election Day to become automatically provisional until the voter’s information could be verified a second time.

The Gazette reports the provision is one of three elections laws changes proposed by Senator Sandy Salmon of Janesville. The other two propose that all ballots would be recorded, preserved and be considered public information, and would allow the challenging of voter registration information across county lines.

Salmon said the proposals are needed to prevent election fraud and ensure the list of voters in the state is accurate and current.
