Iowa’s three Regents universities are requesting to swap out the schools’ higher-ranked listed peers with schools that are more closely ranked by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports the University of Iowa currently sits below all but one of its current listed peers in the rankings. School officials want to drop two of its highest-ranked peers in UCLA and the University of Texas. The schools are ranked #1 and #10 among public institutions, respectively, by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The two universities would be replaced by Michigan State and Utah, if UI officials have their way. Those two schools rank #35 and #48.
Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa all maintain a list of ten similar institutions to which they compare themselves. Only four of Iowa’s listed peer institutions reciprocated by including the UI in their lists. Michigan State and Utah currently include Iowa in their peer lists, while UCLA and Texas do not.
