Fans hoping for sweeping changes for the University of Iowa football program were vocally disappointed this week when head coach Kirk Ferentz told the media that the coaching staff, specifically offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, all would be coming back for the 2023 season.

Iowa’s offense is ranked 130th in the country, which the coach said is not acceptable, but added that his philosophy works with the right execution. Hawk Fanatic’s Pat Harty asked him what he would say to fans who were expecting a shakeup in coaching personnel.

Ferentz: I don’t pay a lot of attention to what’s being said out there, but I am aware when things are being said just because people are telling me. I think a bigger part of the problem probably is how we play. The Purdue game might be an illustration. We’d built a pretty sizable lead. We were playing well on defense. Really a major part of this you can just put on me, because in my mind right now, it was about winning that game, getting out of there with a win, which we had not done very well the last two times against Purdue. Looked to me, the way we were playing, the best thing we could do was play fairly conservatively.

Ferentz also pointed out that the team is 55-3 when they score 24 or more points a game over the last 7-8 years. He says nobody likes the 24 and fans want more offense, but his focus is on winning, not the points. He also acknowledged that he has to do a better job this upcoming season.

Ferentz: I’m looking at the players, I’m looking at everything involved, and we all can get better, starting with me. I’m not walking away from that at all. But I think we’ve got the right guys. I guess that’s what I’m saying, whether it’s players, coaches, and eager to get to work.
