Iowa City mayor Bruce Teague and Police Chief Dustin Liston issued a joint statement following the release of an arrest video showing the beating of Tyre Nichols in Memphis that led to his death three days later.
The Daily Iowan reports that Teague’s statement acknowledged the unease the video could cause among the community, and vowed to, quote, “continue to listen and learn from one another, and heal and grow stronger together.”
Chief Liston commended the Memphis Police for their swift action in firing the officers involved and offered condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy. The Police Department recommended the use of the CommUnity Crisis Services and the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline if needed.
