Two pets perish in Cedar Rapids fire

A Saturday morning house fire in Cedar Rapids resulted in the deaths of two pets.

In a release from the city’s Fire Department, crews were called to the 1600 block of A Avenue Northwest at 9:30 am on reports of smoke and flames coming from a home. Arriving firefighters found the fire originated in the kitchen area of the one-story structure.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but two pet dogs perished. A cat was rescued.

The house suffered moderate fire and heavy smoke damage to the interior and its contents.

The occupants were displaced; the cause of the fire is under investigation.
