A transient who witnesses say declared he was going to steal a beer and punch a cop…was arrested after doing exactly that Wednesday night.
The declaration was reported by the clerk at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh on Stevens Drive just after 5:30pm. 31-year-old Jonathon Bushby reportedly grabbed a beer and started drinking it while still inside the store. He then allegedly tried to punch arriving officers.
Police say Bushby was taken out of Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh with minimal force, but once outside he struck an officer who was trying to place him into handcuffs.
Bushby is charged with two counts of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and one count each of Interference With Official Acts and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
