A Shelter House resident faces charges that she assaulted police on two separate occasions over the last few days.

Iowa City Police were first called to the Waterfront Hy-Vee just after 8:45 Thursday night for a woman who had been previously trespassed from the store refusing to leave. When officers asked the woman for her name, she allegedly refused to give it and tried to flee. One officer grabbed the woman’s shoulder, and she reportedly responded by pushing and punching the officer’s chest. Police say she also resisted handcuffing and tried to push herself off of the squad car.

The suspect was later determined to be 37-year-old Shelter House resident Kayleigh Heath. She’s charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both counts, Heath faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.

Heath was arrested again just before 4:45 Saturday afternoon after allegedly keying a pair of cars on Cross Park Avenue. When approached by officers, she was reportedly trying to draw on a nearby apartment building’s dryer with a pencil. When police took the pencil, she allegedly grabbed a pen and continued to write on the dryer. When police tried to take the pen away, Heath reportedly tried to stab them with it.

Heath faces additional charges of 2nd Degree and 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief and another count each of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on those charges, she faces a maximum of over eight years in prison.
