A midday New Year’s Day fire displaced the occupants of a Cedar Rapids home.

According to a release from the fire department, reports came in at around 12:50 pm on reports of smoke coming from a home on the 1700 block of C Avenue Northwest.  Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the two-story home.

No one was home at the time of the fire, so crews had to force their way in. The fire reportedly started in a first-floor bedroom. A pet dog was rescued during the incident.

The home suffered moderate fire and heavy smoke damage to its interior. The CRFD says smoke alarms were not working. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
