Coralville Police have formally charged an Iowa City man who stole a woman’s vehicle outside Trader Joe’s earlier this month.

The incident occurred at around 10 am on December 12th outside the grocery store. 30-year-old Dewayne Corley-Jones Jr. of Gilbert Court held the victim at knife point and demanded money. When she had no cash, he allegedly restrained her and drove her in her vehicle to a location on the Coralville Strip and demanded that she get money there while he stayed in the vehicle.

Corley-Jones allegedly stole the woman’s vehicle while she was inside. A Coralville officer on patrol located him in the woman’s vehicle and attempted to stop him with lights and sirens activated. Corley-Jones did not stop and fled at a high rate of speed.

Iowa City Police say later that day, he stole another woman’s vehicle at knife point and fled the state. He was arrested in Peoria County Illinois after a pursuit ended with Corley-Jones crashing the vehicle and getting ejected.  He was brought back to Johnson County, and they charged him with 1st degree Theft and 1st degree Robbery.

For the Coralville incident, Corley-Jones was charged with Kidnapping 2nd degree with use of a dangerous weapon; Going Armed with Intent; 2nd degree Theft; 1st degree Harassment; Eluding; and Robbery 1st degree. If convicted on all counts involving both incidents, Corley-Jones could be sentenced to up to 98 years in prison.
