Citing increasing costs to maintain its current location and a 75 percent drop in enrollment over the past five years, Kirkwood Community College plans on making changes to its Iowa City campus.

The Gazette reports that college president Lori Sundberg told faculty and staff in an e-mail last week that she expects the coming spring semester to be the last at its current Iowa City location. A recent study found that the college would have to spend nearly $40 million over the next two dozen years to maintain the current campus.

Administrators at the Cedar Rapids-based college are looking at alternative locations, considering community needs, and discussing an expanded partnership with the Iowa City Community School District.

Kirkwood spokesperson Justin Hoehn says they remain fully committed to serve Iowa City and the rest of Johnson County, but added that it was likely they will not stay in the current location.

President Sundberg said that they hope to make a decision on the fate of the Iowa City footprint early next year, to give students time to plan for where they will attend classes.

Possible new locations for the campus include the main ACT campus, Pearson Iowa City, and the ACT Tyler building.
