Coralville Police are trying to determine the identity of a shoplifter who they say was in possession of multiple drugs upon his arrest.

The man, listed in arrest records as “John Doe”, reportedly entered Scheels at the Coral Ridge Mall just after 2:30 Friday afternoon, selected merchandise, then tried leaving through an employees-only door. Store staff stopped the man in the parking lot. The total value of the stolen merchandise was about $55.

Arriving officers say the suspect refused to identify himself, telling them, “That’s your job to find out.” A broken glass pipe containing a green, burnt substance was allegedly found on his person. A second, functioning pipe with the same substance was found in another pocket. A third glass pipe with a cloudy substance was reportedly found in his backpack, as was a prescription pill bottle with the label removed. It contained three unidentified pills.

The man was charged with 5th Degree Theft Against an Older Individual, Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
